To his father -30 October 1914:

Darling Papa, We keep having damp weather but the air is clear. We made a bonfire and I smeared my face with soot.

To his father -24 November 1914:

Dear Papa, Yesterday we played at war. I took the enemy trench in one moment but was immediately thrown back and taken prisoner. But at that very second I broke away and scrammed! My fortifications remained. I fell well. How is your health? Write to me! A big kiss. May God protect you.

My darling Papa!
Today there is a strong frost! Lots of snow, the tower is frozen.
Yesterday I was at Pavlovsk, the locomotive there  flattened one of my pennies. The day before yesterday I saw at the farm, how they prepare milk and cream and make butter. It was very appetizing. I feel well. I am studying satisfactory. Keep well. May the Lord protect you! A big kiss.

Dear Papa, Today day I got dressed for the first time. In this whole time I have only lost 1 pound. There is 8 degrees of frost outside. In a quarter of an hour the doctors will be here, probably to poke around again. I miss you. Are you coming for the Christmas tree?
I don’t know what to write, everything is the same as always.

Dear Mama, yesterday I missed you a lot. Together with Papa, we sniffed the pillow and the curtain, you know why.
Yesterday V. Nikolaevich won a lot of money at nane jaine. Today Gilliard had a hair wash. He is as fluffy as a sheep. This ink is impossible.
In the evening I prayed for you (+many times). It feels empty without you.

My Darling Mama,
I was very happy to talk to you and my sisters on the telephone. It was very difficult to hear because the line was made of steel and not copper!
It is real winter here. At 7 o’clock in the morning it was -6 degrees. There’s lots of snow.
How is Olga’s cat!?!
It’s time for my salary. Please!!!!!!!!!!
I saw Zhenia’s elder brother in cinema. He’s a lieutenant in the Nejinsky hussar regiment. Hee’s very nice and looks like Zhenia.

My dear Pyotr Vasilievich:
I send you my best wishes for the coming Christmas and first new year. I hope that you received my last letter. How are you keeping? For the moment we have a little snow, it is so difficult to make a mountain. Joy is getting fatter every day as he keeps eating rubbish from the refuse pit. Everyone chases him away with sticks, he has a lot of friends in town and keeps running away.
I am writing you during my French lesson, as I have almost no free time, but when I am on holiday I will write more often. Greetings and congratulations to the teachers. May the Lord keep you!
